Hieleras: Migrantes,
Mujeres, y Mensajes

Hieleras is one of several Migration Narratives Projects, hosted in 2021 by the Institute for Diversity and Civic Life generously supported by the Henry Luce Foundation.

V. Garcia, a Texas and Arizona Licensed Professional Counselor, and community activist has focused her energies on supporting immigrant populations as a member of the Laredo Immigrant Alliance, by working with multiple immigrant shelters, and multiple other volunteer sites. She is also a Counselor Education and Supervision Ph.D. student at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas. She resides in the borderlands, in Laredo, Texas.

The Hieleras project focuses on interviews with immigrant women who've crossed the US/Mexico border in 2021 in the hopes of a better, safer life; and have all stayed in immigration detention, nicknamed "La Hielera" or in English, the freezer/refrigerator. This art installation project is located in Laredo, Texas, and hopes to grow ... when we finally have some time off.
