Hieleras: Migrantes,
Mujeres, y Mensajes

Hieleras is one of several Migration Narratives Projects, hosted in 2021 by the Institute for Diversity and Civic Life generously supported by the Henry Luce Foundation.

V. Garcia, a Texas counselor, and community activist has focused her energies on supporting immigrant populations as a member of the Laredo Immigrant Alliance, by working with multiple immigrant shelters, and multiple other volunteer sites. She is also a Counselor Education and Supervision Ph.D. student at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas. She and her partner, A. Garcés, an instrumental part of this project, reside in Laredo, Texas with their 2 dogs and 1 cat.

The Hieleras project focuses on interviews with at least three immigrant women who've crossed the US/Mexico border in 2021 in the hopes of a better, safer life; and have all stayed in immigration detention, nicknamed "La Hielera" or in English, the freezer/refrigerator. This art installation project is located in Laredo, Texas, and hopes to grow ... when we finally have some time off.
